I suppose the hazard in buying a home in a newly developed area is that more shit is going to be developed in your area. The sense of peace and quiet and open space that appealed to the home buyers must appeal to everyone else in the world as well. I'm furious and outraged because a big box store chain is about to set up at the corner of the entrance into our subdivision...right next to the elementary school. Tractor trailers will be turning in and out of an access drive that is about 50 feet from the school. The nice street with a flowered median will be widened, and the median taken away. Traffic will be out of control near the school. Our neighborhood doesn't have bus service for the kids. They all walk. Who is going to be lurking about that giant parking lot right by the school? Are our property values going to completely plummet? Who wants to move into a neighborhood directly behind a giant box store? I'm so pissed. I would not have even bought this house if I'd known about this last year.
I went to a community meeting last night with a bunch of other pissed off residents. And yes, we're going to picket and put up signs and boycott the stores and write angry letters to anyone who has an address. But, will it be enough? God, I hope so.

That SUCKS! I would be so pissed off too. Will the high traffic area actually be on your street?

The high traffic won't be on our street, but it is within a few blocks walking distance from us. Orginally they had planned to an upscale, smaller boutique-like shopping area with cafes and trees and brick pathways, etc. Now it is just going to be a giant parking lot and a giant ass stupid store!!!

Certainly the school board doesn't want such a store so close to the school grounds. I would think they could wield some pressure.
Were they present at the community meeting?
THat stinks. Quaint shops with brick paths sound so much nicer than a giant parking lot and box store across from a school. Hopefully you're far enough away to have the convenience without the pain and drop in property value and all.
