Babbling

So, I guess this explains why in every gathering of women, we all end up sharing our birth stories. I remember before we had kids I was so annoyed by the Air Force parties. The guys were all in one room talking flying and the women were all in the kitchen talking labor and delivery. And I was somewhere under a table with a bottle of wine.

Actually, I had some Internet and Pre-1985 Pregnancy Book prescribed wine the other night. I was having nonstop Braxton Hicks contractions that wouldn't stop no matter how much water I drank or how I changed positions. Then I read some advice from midwives online and from some books I have from my Aunt Julie, and they recommended having a small glass of wine. Sure enough! Bye-bye contractions! It was a little odd to be awake at 2 in the morning, 8 months pregnant, pulling wine out of the fridge. Unfortunately, it had been open for awhile and really didn't taste all that great. I really wished they had prescribed two cold beers, but alas! They did not. [I hope someone is taking notes--JOHN--and is planning to bring not one, but two ice cold beers to the hospital when it is time! Forget the flowers. Just bring the beer.]

So. How was your weekend? Ours was good. John and I had a date night down in Baltimore's Little Italy. He had farfalle with crab meat and zucchini. I had potato gnocchi in a gorgonzola cream sauce. Then we attempted to walk around, but I was waddling too much and had eaten too much. So, I voted to just go back to the car, where I clutched my distended abdomen in agony the entire ride home. Yesterday, we all went swimming, and I felt a little sad as I realized it was almost TOO COLD to swim (In AUGUST. The Texan in me is very confused by this.) I guess it means summer is almost over. This might have been the fastest summer of my entire life, including those short Alaskan ones. I haven't yet taken advantage of all the things I was going to do! We've hardly eaten outside on the porch. We didn't go peach picking or canoeing. We never had that neighborhood party we wanted to host. I still haven't taken Becca's kite or fishing poles out of their original packaging!

Oh well. The good thing about not being Active Duty anymore is that I know we can do all that stuff next year or the next year. Or the next. That is a good feeling...

Did the drinking come the family side of things or the military, I vote both.

Hey! I get so far behind on catching up with people and posting that I don't know where to start. I have the best gift I am going to send you for your new baby! A friend gave it to me and now I should be done with it (it is something I can't buy myself so I will have to regift it). Joel and I went on a date tonight (ellen too) but it was to the "Gucci" HEB. I actually had a great time browsing with no kids running all over the place. We had soup and salad. He bought expensive beer and I bought some organic stuff. Gotta love Central Market. But as for the wine during pregnancy...I had a few glasses every now and then. I actually had more then that I do now. Weird. And for the last post on natural childbirth. I REALLY REALLY wish I could have done that!!! But unfortunately, c-sections was the way for me. I am pulling for you all the way! GO NATURAL! You've done it before. You are a pro now!

Aunt Julie would have a heart attack knowing that she'd contributed to the delinquency of a pregnant niece!

Out of sheer curiosity, what made you get out of the Air Force?

This summer DID seem short. It feels like we're barreling into slush and "needing to fuss with coats and boots every time we go out the door" season now.

I also find how August starts feeling like fall thing really odd. I swear August is the HOTTEST month in Arkansas, and here (and Alaska) the leaves are already beginning to change.

It is funny how birth stories become such a big thing to share. I guess it's something that we all (mothers with natural children) share. I think sometimes they are like fishing stories. The fish gets bigger=the birth story gets bigger (longer labor, more/less painful)

Oh, I totally know about those AF parties of long ago. Everyone talking about their kids, and/or housewifey stuff. Bor-ing! I hated going to them. Now I understand better, and if nothing else, can contribute to the conversations.

Funny about the beer! I hope John brings you your favorites.

And swimming - maybe we are just getting older? I have been tiptoeing into the pool here, and it's in the triple digits. It just seems COLDER than it ought to in that water!
