Stories

Becca wants us to tell her a story every night. We have started asking her what she wants the story to be about. The other night she told John she wanted a story about "insects" (I didn't even know she knew that word.) She also told him she wanted a story about popsicles. Last night she said to me, "Tell me about Dora. Dora goes to IKEA."

I know every parent has to justify how much TV they let their kids watch. And I've heard so many parents talk about how their kids actually learn stuff from TV. But, I always just shrugged and assumed they were just saying that to make themselves feel better. But, well.....Becca has learned some serious shit from TV. Last week she said, "I'm jumping high! Like a chinchilla." Dude, I didn't even know that chinchillas could jump. Recently I asked her to count something and she just busted out one through ten in Spanish. I have never, EVER done that with her. She didn't learn it from me (but I am glad she learned it somewhere). The other day we were looking at a book and there was this weird anteater type critter. John and I were like, "What is that animal?" And Becca said, "A tapir." John and I just looked at each other. A tapir? What the hell is a tapir? So, I'd like to give Diego a big shout out for the babysitting and tutoring services he so freely offers.

Love it! What a smartie!

We love Dora and Diego too and Liv's a sarcastic little brat when we don't know the name of a character or animal. She'll say, "Mooommmm! Come on, it's..."

Like, duh, dude.

Oh, we don't get to watch Dora and Diego enough. I guess not at all now. Ashlyn will be in school when it comes on. I'll have to check out some more D&D videos from the library.

Zach gets the same from Dora/Diego. He had his grandpa pretty floored when he breezed through a Diego book and pointed out a tapir, chinchilla, and a pygmy marmoset.

Yeah, what the hell is a tapir? How do they know these things? I guess I would be smarter, too, if I watched the shows with them, but I just try to get as far away from the TV as possible when Dora is on! Not that that helps reduce the number of Dora songs that get stuck in my head all day.

Becca could have learned the meaning of "tapir" from her Grandpa Jack.

What a smart little girl! Reid is totally into the light changes on the TV, so we joke a lot about the digital babysitter. I told Ben about your post and he was super impressed by Becca and her ability to retain what she sees/hears from the boob tube and commented how most of what he knows he learned from TV :0)

Screw The Wiggles, I need to tivo Salem Dora! I've never had her watch it because by the sound and looks of it (spanish and such), it looked to "advanced"; but now, you totally have me sold!

I actually find Dora VERY annoying and slow. Diego seems like a big step up!!
