2 Months!

On the super cute airplane quilt made by his Great Aunt Linda!

Andrew is 2 months old now (8 weeks, though we aren't quite at Nov 23). We had his checkup today and he weighs 11 pounds, 9 ounces. He weight is in the 50%, his height is 25% (if you believe the inaccurate crazy measuring system involving a roll of paper on a table and a squirming infant) and his head size is 70%. So, he's a short, stocky big headed baby. Poor thing! Good thing he's cute! And good thing he is sleeping on a more regular schedule now. He wakes up at 2 a.m. and again at 5 a.m. Unfortunately, he doesn't go to bed until about 11 p.m. and doesn't really go back to sleep very well after the 5 a.m. feeding. And Becca has been waking up at 5 or 6. So, the exhaustion is at least predictable now.

Becca is really into princess dress up stuff. Lately, her favorite thing to do is to line up all her shoes. She arranges and re-arranges them.

I loved reading what you guys do about playing/toys. I am also very reassured that none of you really want to just sit around and play with princesses all day either. I thought everyone else was at home playing make-believe with their kids all day and I felt bad about myself for not doing it. So, thanks for letting me know I'm not alone in that. I am intrigued by the idea of labeling the toy bins. I think I will attempt that. One day. When I sleep some more.

We have toy shelves with baskets on them. And I know what goes in each basket, but Becca doesn't and John doesn't and when other moms are over here, of course they don't either. So that is why I think labels might really be a good idea. I throw away all the McD's toys and other random shit that never gets played with on a semi-regular basis. But there are also the big, nice toys that hardly ever get played with and I struggle with what to do with them. Like the Little People Farm. Every once in a while the neighborhood kids will pull it out and scatter the parts around, but Becca totally ignores it. I guess I should save it for Andrew....but still. Oh, and Mr. Potato Head got dumped at the Goodwill today. Good riddance!

The state of my house really drives me completely BONKERS all. day. long. If I stay relatively on top of my kitchen and family room, then the rest of the house is trashed. Or vice versa. I know that it is unreasonable to expect to have it cleaned when I have a newborn and am here by myself a lot. But damn. It still annoys me. Probably because I don't go anywhere anymore. And I just sit here, noticing all the crap everywhere! And I use every spare second (other than when I'm blogging!) to work at it, and yet you cannot even tell. So frustrating!

Aunt Linda's quilt is awesome as is the adorable little guy sitting on it!

Linda has numerous quilts going at any one time - she's amazing!

I can't believe it's been two months already! Congrats - the whole family looks great (as usual!). I too depend heavily on baskets/buckets to organize toddler stuff. I like the one-toy-in/one-toy-out rule now that we've reached critical mass in our toy storage. So, if a new toy comes in, something has to go (trash, charity, tag sale). It turns into more of a "guideline" than a rule, but our house is too small for toys that don't get played with. Good job with Mr. Potato Head - why is that so popular if no kid actually plays with it?

I'm certainly willing to discuss commissioning a quilt.

As for toys...it may have something to do with age appropriateness. There's a reason some toys are only for "over three" -- maybe Mr. Potato Head appeals to five or six year olds. Teaching kids to pick up toys is an ongoing process. (One that in which I had only limited success.) If Becca wants you to play with her, maybe you can teach her to clean bathtubs and mop floors. After all, Cinderella has to finish her chores before she can dress for the ball. Kids learn by doing, and they don't so much want to "play" as to have your attention. So working together can be satisfying, too.

Age appropriate is a challenge with tools, as well. My son begged to be allowed to mow the lawn with the real mower at age six (instead of following behind with his plastic mower). By the time he was old enough to operate the power mower safely, he had lost interest. It's a delicate balance....

Love,
(Great) Aunt Linda

Only 70% on the head cicumference? That's small!! Well, relatively speaking anyway. Ben's head circumference was always off the charts! Means there's lots of room for brains.
