Overwhelmed

Would you like to know how my night was last night? I will tell you. Andrew went to sleep around 10 p.m. I finally fell asleep around 11. Then, he woke up 12. Then, he woke again at 2 a.m. and then at 2:45 a.m. He didn't go back to sleep until 3:30 a.m. Then he woke again at 5:30 a.m. Then, Becca woke up at 6:00 a.m. yelling that her lambie had fallen behind her bed.

Wow. I thought it would be better by now. But it isn't.

Also, it is that time of year. The good ol' holiday spirit is kicking in and I'm feeling stressed out about it. It is hard enough to get daily shit accomplished [see also: floor covered in crumbs and toys, refrigerator empty due to screaming infant in grocery store] without a new infant in the house and with a full night of sleep. Now that everything is topsy turvy, I just feel like I'm standing in the middle of a swirling maelstrom and I can't focus my eyes. Every once in a while something will zip by me, and I think, "Oh yes. I need to do that." But then it is gone and I can't remember my middle name, much less what I'm supposed to be doing. Then I wonder why shit is flying around my head.

I keep walking into rooms and find myself wondering why I'm in there. I keep losing things.

[Side note: if you are someone who I usually buy Christmas gifts for, please....PLEASE, just send me some ideas, because otherwise, you are going to get whatever random item I find when I flip open the Plow and Hearth catalog and point to something. So, unless you're really in the market for a pig-shaped watering can, it would be good to give me some hints.]

My brain is sluggish, my memory is shot, my ability to accomplish anything seems to be gone. I can't even remember what I'm supposed to be doing long enough to....

....zzzzzz..

Sorry. What was I saying? I have a nagging feeling that I was thinking about something important.

Oh, Katie, it will get better. It will.

And, you would probably be given a pass this year if everyone got an Amazon gift certificate. Well, except maybe Becca.

I have wild aspirations for many homemade gifts. Not sure how that is all going to work out, especially since most of those need to be mailed by the first of December to make sure they arrive. So, I have two weeks to make all of them, with my parents visiting, and Thanksgiving. Hmm.

Ha ha! I think you should just place an order for a dozen: pig-shaped watering cans for everyone! (Or Amazon gift cards. That's a good idea, too.)

How about forgetting Christmas gifts for everyone but John and Becca this year? I'm betting that the people to whom you send gifts are loyal readers of your blog. As a spokesperson for us ALL, Bevo says that your Christmas gift to us IS your blog! We need nothing more than a glimpse into your life, and we get our gift all through the year! Thank you so very much!

BTW, your middle name is GRACE! That means you get a GRACE period whenever you need it!

This is rude but it's me. Your blog stresses me out. How do you do it? I hope Angie is right and that it gets better. I had a 6 month over for a day and I thought it was awful...maybe one day when Mikey is in school.

Lysandra, it stresses me out too! It didn't for the first 6 weeks. I thought it was much easier than I had imagined. But I think it is all kind of catching up with me and not improving as fast as I expected (the sleep I mean). But, I know it will. That is the beauty of baby number 2. You know how fast it all goes....

It's sleep deprivation. That's what I think. But I do the same thing - wandering around wondering what it was I was about to do. Thinking about Xmas gifts stresses me out - but I don't start or want to start until after Thanksgiving. I say take one holiday at a time. No one remembers from one year to the next what I gave them anyway. It will get better - nothing stays the same and how much worse could it get? How's that for positive thinking??

oh my! I think I am going to have to set up a day for Andrew to come over(and Becca of course) How's Friday? I'll come get them after I drop Madison off and bring them home after I pick up Madison? Sound like a plan? Okay, it's settled.

Hang in there Katie! No sleep is the worst, worst, worst and it will get better. Sleep deprivation one night gives me a cloudy brain for 3 days. Your nights of sleep deprivation are stacking up. Hang in there!

Uhhh....I think you told me you were going to get me a Wii and the guitar hero game. No presure though. I understand if you forgot.

I do hope you get some rest. I hate having Mom-nesia where you can't remember where you were going and why you were going there. If it makes you feel better. I almost forgot Claire at school today. And I was already there to help with Katheryn's class.

At your kids age my house was spottless , was ^ at 5:00 A.M. , HAD THE CLOTHES LINES FULL, got breakfast for hubby, got him off 2 work , and from there it was a breze, must be the 50's generation , we programed the kids , they did'nt have a chance to program us . A cry don't always mean J-U-M-P!!!!1

Your anonymous commenters are mean! I think the worst thing that you can say to a sleep deprived mother of an infant is "they have it easy!" Whatever. Especially to a mom who obviously loves her sleep as much as YOU!

I feel your EXACT pain! Plus, I still have the nesting bullshit going on top of it all!

I'm right there with you. It sucks and I'm tired. There is so much work I need to get done (pay bills, paper work, etc) but none of it gets done becuase if there is a brief moment when both kids are sleeping at the same time, then I sleep, too, not get work done.

Dear Katie,
"Bevo" is right. You only have to buy two gifts this year. Andrew is too young to care. If you think Becca will enjoy helping you put up holiday decorations (and maybe help make cookies -- always a favorite at our house), that might be a good tradition to start. You don't have to do everything yourself, and three is an age when kids want to help. Imitate your grandmother -- send Groundhog's Day cards. Take the kids to the Sunday School program on Christmas Eve and go to bed early (if you can). That's enough Christmas for anyone. If you have visiting family, let them wash dishes.

I'm not doing anything Christmas until December 1. I've got 30,000 words to write before then!
Love,
(Great) Aunt Linda
