Oh, Yes I Did

So, Andrew was out of puffs. And kind of pissed about it. And so my mom said, "Do you have any Cheerios?" And I thought, "Yes. We do." And then I said, "Wow....the second kid is so different. I wouldn't have dreamt of giving Becca sugary honey nut Cheerios before the regular kind, but all I have is the honey nut kind and we're desperate, so...hopefully he'll take the regular kind at some point later."

And....I wasn't thinking straight and I GAVE MY BABY NUT PRODUCTS! (And honey--another bad idea--for that matter.)

If you know me, you know that nuts are the very LAST thing I would knowingly give to a baby. A baby who has two parents that carry the "allergy gene" according to Becca's allergist (who told me not even to eat nut products while nursing!) I still can't believe I did that.

He didn't seem to have a reaction, but I can tell you I did. Luckily, my hyperventilation was cured with a delicious mexican martini that my dad served in breakable antique glassware.

to ease your mind about the honey - I emailed the company once and there's no danger from the honey -

I was just going to write that about the honey. I also emailed or called or something the company. No harm in that. Sometimes, desperate times calls for desperate measures!

fyi- there's no real nuts or raw honey to react to in honey nut cheerios. my peanut allergic son eats them all the time with no problem. i think it's just almond flavoring in the cereal, no nuts.

I gave Ashlyn honey nut cheerios before she was a year old, because I was out of the regular ones. At the time I wasn't even thinking about the nuts and honey in it, but I guess according to anonymous you were good. And, you know recent studies have shown that early exposure is actually less likely to end with allergies. Not that I'm suggesting you do something differently than your allergist suggested.

I also kept messing up with stuff while I was pregnant. Some things I just didn't know when I was pregnant with Ashlyn (like deli meat) and with Christopher I just forgot. I had the best brie grilled sandwich, plus at least one deli type sandwich a month (right after my ob appt!) Yum.

A mexican martini? What is that, exactly? It sounds fabulous.

I gave HN cheerios to Kate at that age, too, because I was desperate at a restaurant once. She's 3 1/2 and no allergies so far...

Heehee~ the joys of motherhood. I have a friend that has been feeding her child (one month older than Reid) eggs. So you are good! Sounds like he enjoyed them and survived to tell the tale :0)

I think that the whole cooking process with the honey mostly negates the (very small) risk of botulism. Also, Emmett has a peanut allergy (which was SHOCKING since neither of us have any allergies whatsoever) but he can eat honeynut cheerios just fine. I guess they have tree nuts, not peanuts in them?
