How I Spent My Christmas Vacation

*Update at bottom*
Becca is still quite sick. We flew home today, which was scary and I almost hyperventilated the entire ride. I swear I watched the water being sucked out of her body in the dry airline air. She refused to drink (except for a few piddly sips) and just laid on me, limp and fussy, breathing rapidly--as though out of breath--and coughing every 5 seconds. She will have moments where she springs to life, and acts almost normal. She will ask for food and play with her toys and even dance. She had one of those "just like normal moments" while waiting in the ER. Behold:

I will feel an enormous weight lift off my chest, thinking it is over.... but then BANG! She is back to being completely sick again and almost unable to hold her head up. And, I slide back into the ultimate "Despairing Hyper-vigilant Helicopter Mom Prone to Panic Attacks."

I am ready to just stay home for a while. I came to that conclusion as I sat there with a wheezing child for AN HOUR waiting for our bags to show up at baggage claim. And, I spent about 20 minutes of that stressing out about why our car seat was lost. (John was off getting the car and driving it around). My blood pressure skyrocketed as I heard my internal dialogue start screaming about how it was time for Becca's nebulizer treatment and how the FUCK could they lose a car seat on a non-stop flight. John found out that car seats, when wrapped in airline plastic bags, get put out near the golf clubs and dog kennels and skis. That would have been good to know ahead of time.

I will return later with fun holiday photos (I did actually get quite a few!) I hope you are all enjoying the holidays and preparing for a peaceful and healthy 2008. I know we are.

*Update: I just got a call from the ER saying she is on the WRONG ANTIBIOTIC for the UTI. WTF? Seriously? So, she has been UNTREATED now for that UTI for 4 days? I can't believe it. That is awful! The pain of a UTI is horrible....no wonder she feels so badly. So, back we go to the pediatrician tomorrow to get yet another antibiotic! Maybe this one will actually do the trick and she will show some improvement!

I am so glad you are back and taking some down time; you all need it, I agree. I know that your experience had to have been heart breaking (It was for me just reading it.). I wish Miss Becca a speedy recovery. Lots of hugs your way.

We are so ready to have you around for a while. She is a tough kid. She will probably bounce back quickly in her own enviornment. (I am going to remind you of that when you are ready to strangle her because she is back to normal!!) Hope to see you soon

Two words: NO FUN.

At least you know your New Year should be off to a better start in a few days. Hope Ms. Becca gets feeling better!

How stressful. Made even more so by an extreme lack of sleep for you. There really isn't much worse than an extremely sick kid, is there? If there is, please don't tell me - I can't imagine it.

I hope Becca feels better soon. I'm sure she will be happy to be home and sleep in her own bed, or on Canyon. I'm looking forward to seeing your holiday photos when you get a chance!

OH HONEY. I'm so sorry you've had such a tough time. Just continue being the incredible mom that you are and that baby will feel better soon, I'm sure. She's in my prayers. xoxox.

I feel so bad for both of you!! I REALLY HATE that she is so sick. And I know what it feels like to have one sick like that. But I do know that she will get better. I know that doesn't make things better right now though. Hopefully with the new meds it will get better quickly.

The WRONG antibiotic! At least they did discover it. That sounds wrong, though. Sick kids are pitiful. And during travel, too. Ugh. I'm so sorry, Katie, but I was glad to read that John was with you on the return.

The wrong antibiotic. How fun can it get? Seriously, people. Was it the ER that prescribed it? I want to say we had a similar experience with our ER and Kate's UTI, but I have mentally blocked it all out.

I wanted to say that you sound sort of like you are blaming yourself for Becca being sick...and it's not your fault. Even if you had stayed home, she would have gotten sick, and then you wouldn't have had all that family around to help you out. Almost every child I know has gotten sick this holiday season, and many have gone to the ER.

I hope she starts feeling better today.

I was put on the wrong antibiotic for a UTI once. I kept wondering why I didn't feel better. I thought I was going to die. Turned out, when they retested my urine sample, they found out the one I was taking wasn't strong enough to fight it - or something along that line. I hope she feels better soon and they get her the right one antibiotic!

Oh my goodness. You poor things. Those pictures of Becca made me so sad for both of you! I hope she feels better soon. At least she's got a good mama to take care of her.

Oh my Lord!!! That sucks. I can't believe she is so sick and miserable. I am sorry. I really hope things start to improve soon. What a scary and horrible couple of weeks. Hang in there.

Ok...I have been wanting to leave you a comment for about 6 months now...especially when you did the whole de-lurker piece (you really made me feel like a total sicko peeping tom)... however, I always felt that I was behind the curve ball having not made a comment within the seemingly "normal" timeframe...hello, Andrea filled me on how on this whole blog thing works and that you actually get an email notifying you of a new comment even if it is ~2-3 weeks behind the rest of the pack, who knew...I love reading your blog but get wrapped up in cleaning the house or something just as uninteresting, so it just takes me a little longer to get online to do so. But with the New Year and seeing some old friends, I had just the inspiration needed to de-lurk and wish you and your family a Happy New Year!

P.S. Hope your Becca is feeling much better...Thank God for antibiotics, we pop them like vitamins around here! Noelle

Seriously, did you go to a military ER? (oh wait, did I really go there?) Hopefully this will do the trick. Good luck with the open peds on New years day. How are you feeling?
