Organizationally Challenged

Oh the photos, the photos. The pictures. The albums, the digital files, the online albums, the CDs. It is enough to make me want to chuck my camera out the winodw. I am really working on trying to get my shit straight in the photo department.

I spent at least an hour today downloading original size files from my Flickr account to my external hard drive. Then, I spent about another hour uploading them to an online album. Then, I started going through a box of photos and found those exact. same. photos. Already printed. From a different online album. I WASTED TWO HOURS. I could have been napping. Well, I did nap, so I guess that doesn't make sense. I could have been cleaning the house. Or reading. Or stabbing my own eyeballs out while looking at my giant piles of photo albums. Geez. I am swamped by photos. Absoulely swamped. I don't know which ones I have printed. I don't know where the ones are that I haven't printed. I filled a brand new THICK photo album with photos and realized it only covered 2 months. Something has to be done. I need an intervention.....a valium.....and a personal secretary to just HANDLE THIS for me. But, oh....the addiction. It is so powerful. There is just something about photos....

Wow. You just described one of the biggest and most ANNOYING monkeys on my back. I CAN'T BREAK FREE. It's been snowballing now for over a year. I have not put a single photo in an album for a whole year. And somewhere along the line I stopped printing them. And now? Now I do not know where I left off.

*deep breathing*

This comment is making me break into a cold sweat. Help. Can't breathe.

I love that last photo. Amazing. Powerful.

I print photos out about 2 times a year, if I'm lucky. I do try to upload each month's photos to shutterfly (as you've probably noted), so that in case my computer crashes, I have them at least SOMEWHERE else. But it is overwhelming. I totally stress out just thinking about it. I think I'll go have a glass of wine to chill out.

I've made 2 photo books of the same photos before. not on purpose. Talk about wasted time. Oh, and I bought both books. You just have too many keepers in your photos. Take bad pictures and your problem is solved!

I have two picture frames (one for each girl) that document the first year of life. Monthly. You've seen them. Well, there isn't one single photo in either of them and I have no idea where to begin. I have pictures on two computrs, a few different online sites (KodakGallery, Shuttefly, Flickr). I'm screwed. I haven't ordered pictures in about a year. Liv's baby book stopped at about month two or three. I have random pictures in different albums. It's a bad situation and my daughters will be so disappointed when they are grown and have to sift through piles and and CD's of pictures and I have to guess at what age they were and where we were living at the time. The only upside is that they have different color hair and eyes so I won't mix up who's who. But, I hope to to get everything sorted out by the time they are married.

when i got my digital camera, i started printing at home, then i would do ofoto. i was getting crazed b/c there was NO system. what if i missed printing one photo? but i really want to clear the camera so i don't have things sitting there.
i finally found a system that worked for me. I do it every couple of months. i upload to ofoto, i send out to friends/family and i order a 4x6 of every photo, then i delete from camera, and put photos in an album. i usually send out ane mail with 100 photos - i think this might annoy some family.

I hear you loud and clear!!!! I just bought a TON of photo organizing boxes thinking that might help the issue. Instead, the madness as gotten worse. My entire office has pictures scattered on the floor, walls, desk, shelves, etc., and now, I'm afraid to even open the doors in there. I find other things to do to occupy my time so I don't have to tackle the photos.

I've been working on the same thing today.

When Ashlyn was born, one of my goals was to print photos and put them in albums. After 15 or 16 months, I realized that our shelf was already full. That's when I stopped. I now think I am going with photo books, just because of the slim size. I will still print a few photos for frames.

One thing that has helped me with printed photos is that I save all photos by their date. Then, the date the photo was taken is already on the back when it is printed. Just one less thing to do after it is printed.

I have just had the same problem this past week!!!! I decided to do the online scrapbooking from now on. My high hopes of ever getting Luke's baby book done is a lost cause. I get more done online in less time. And it takes up less space! I realized I hadn't taken any pictures of my kids this month! So I got the camera back out and put it on the counter where I could see it and it is an easy reach! When I do print pictures, I only print my favorites. That is also a problem, because I have a lot of favorites.

You are making headway, don't give up. You told me the other day you put all of the ones you printed in date order. That is a great amount of work. give yourself credit!
Oh and I do feel you pain. Mine are in order, but where am I going to put it all? It is making me quite dizzy thinking about it.

I was JUST BARELY keeping up, with only occasional problems, until Henry was born. I haven't been able to catch up since. I think I'm going to keep taking lots of photos for now, consider the sorting/organizing of them my Empty Nest Project.
